NAGAR’s work on Mumbai’s historic forts focuses on preserving, restoring, and revitalising these significant heritage landscapes for public benefit. Through extensive documentation and on-ground research, NAGAR conducted a comprehensive survey of eight important forts in the city and published Abandoned Treasures, a book highlighting their cultural and architectural value.
Alongside this research, NAGAR has prepared a detailed report outlining strategies for the restoration of the forts and the rejuvenation of their surrounding areas. The organisation continues to advocate with the Government of Maharashtra, the Directorate of Archaeology & Museums, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to ensure the conservation of these sites and to promote their meaningful use as accessible public spaces.
This initiative forms a key part of NAGAR’s wider efforts to safeguard Mumbai’s built and natural heritage and to support policy actions such as the timely notification of heritage lists and incentives for heritage property owners.
